macOS 15 Sequoia System Requirements

macOS 15 Sequoia System Requirements

macOS Sequoia requirements for school Macs

macOS Sequoia is version 15 of Apple’s Mac operating system. This guide covers model compatibility, feature requirements and checks for a school deployment. Confirm the exact model in Apple’s Sequoia compatibility list; support for Sequoia does not mean every feature is available or that Sequoia is the newest compatible macOS.

Which Macs support macOS Sequoia?

Apple’s list includes these model families and years. Use the linked list to confirm the exact screen size, ports and model identifier before upgrading; do not assume a newer model can run an older macOS release.

  • MacBook Pro: listed models from 2018 through 2024.
  • MacBook Air: listed models from 2020 through 2025, including the Intel Retina 13-inch 2020 model.
  • iMac: listed models from 2019 through 2024.
  • iMac Pro: the 2017 model.
  • Mac mini: 2018, M1 2020, 2023 and 2024 models.
  • Mac Studio: 2022, 2023 and 2025 models.
  • Mac Pro: 2019 and 2023 models.

Processor and memory checks

Both selected Intel Macs and Apple silicon Macs appear on Apple’s Sequoia compatibility list. Check the exact model instead of relying on its processor family alone. Separately, confirm the memory and storage requirements of your school’s applications and test the workload on a representative device.

How much free storage is needed?

Do not use an installer’s download size as a universal installation-space requirement. Check the available storage on the target Mac and follow the installer’s space requirements. Apple’s Software Update instructions explain how to find compatible updates. Back up the device before installation.

Feature requirements differ from macOS compatibility

  • iPhone Mirroring: Apple supports Macs with Apple silicon or the Apple T2 Security Chip, with macOS Sequoia 15 or later and an iPhone running iOS 18 or later. Account, connection and regional requirements also apply; check Apple’s iPhone Mirroring requirements.
  • Apple Intelligence: Sequoia compatibility alone does not establish feature eligibility. Check the requirements for the specific feature and software version; Apple’s current Apple Intelligence guidance covers the latest generation and should not be treated as a Sequoia feature list.

What schools should check before upgrading

Before upgrading to macOS Sequoia, it’s important to consider the following:

  • Software Compatibility: Ensure that your critical applications are compatible with macOS Sequoia. Some legacy apps, particularly those developed for Intel-based Macs, may not function as intended or may require updates.
  • Backup Your Data: Before upgrading any operating system, make sure to back up your data using Time Machine or a similar service.
  • Test a pilot group: Confirm classroom apps, peripherals and device-management policies on representative Macs before scheduling a wider rollout.
